The American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) and the American Welding Society (AWS) recently met with Railway Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss the implementation of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Welding training programs aimed at bolstering safety and reliability in India’s railway system. The meeting, held at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi, underscored a shared commitment to advanced training and certification for railway personnel.

Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of integrating welding and NDT into all divisions, stating, “Training our people in these areas is key to achieving this goal.” In response, ASNT plans to establish a state-of-the-art Training Centre for NDT professionals in India, specializing in computer-based certifications aligned with the International Standard ISO 9712. This initiative aims to equip railway personnel with essential skills to enhance safety and operational efficiency.

The delegation from ASNT and AWS also explored partnerships with several leading corporations and public sector units, including Hindustan Construction Company and GAIL India, to promote NDT training for Level 2 and Level 3 testing. This focus on training is expected to elevate safety and quality across diverse sectors, including infrastructure projects, automotive manufacturing, and aerospace.

Furthermore, discussions with the Ministry of Skills Development & Entrepreneurship explored enhancing welding training through AWS-accredited courses in 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). This initiative aims to develop a skilled workforce, providing opportunities for future generations in the machining and manufacturing industries.

ASNT CEO Neal Couture and AWS representatives expressed enthusiasm for long-term partnerships to advance safety and quality in India’s infrastructure. These collaborative efforts are poised to make significant impacts on the machining industry, fostering innovation and elevating standards in non-destructive testing and welding practices across various sectors.
